The Sovereignty of God

Trusting God’s will to be supreme (1 Timothy 6:15-16)

Paul J. Bucknell

An Introduction to the Sovereignty of God

People, including many believers, often have a hard time accepting God’s sovereignty. We like to think we control our lives and decisions. We want, if not demand, our rights, freedom and choices.

Despite our resistance, God is still fully in control. Our lives would be greatly blessed if we could learn from how Jesus mastered trusting God’s sovereign will even in the rough times.

Sovereignty & Providence of God

The sovereignty of God and the providence of God wonderfully blend together. The sovereignty of God is more abstract asserting God’s overall control and authority.

Providence, however, speaks of His way of integrating that power to gently work along with us in our daily lives. The topics ‘discerning His will’ and ‘knowing God’s will’ are described along with God’s providence.

Although we will focus on God’s absolute control of all things during this session on the sovereignty of God, we must never step into the clumsy and untrue conclusion that God is not concerned about the welfare of mankind. The opposite is true.

God has in a most gracious way incorporated His good will into His plan for our lives. And when needed, He uses all that power to drive every large and minute detail to bring about the spiritual blessing and equipping of His people.

The Sovereignty of God

Insists that God’s purpose and will is perfectly and completely accomplished in time and eternity.

As we develop our trust in God’s overall control of life’s affairs and concern for us, these truths buttress our hope, strength and motivation to faithfully carry out our small part of His will to please Him. Notice how God has so specially designed us so that we could carry out the works that He has created us to accomplish!

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). Commentary | Study questions

The Providence of God

The providence of God subtlety teaches how God interacts with earth’s daily events to bring about His good and perfect will in and through His people.

By understanding God’s involvement in this world, we can avoid the philosophy of fate and chance, and instead eagerly wait upon God to complete His good and perfect will though our lives.

“I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:1-2, NASB).
