Knowing God: Experience & Love Him has many different and challenging chapters introducing the person and works of our amazing God. This chapter 1 introduces the kind of relationship God wants with us, a personal relationship.
“The church rises or falls altogether depending on her view of God.” (A.W.Tozer)
Purpose of Knowing God, chapter 1: Our goal is to personally know God more deeply and as a result of that growing relationship better reflect His glorious person.
“I have trouble enough getting to know people. How can I get to know God? I can’t see Him. I can’t even hear Him. And even if I could meet Him, how would I know I would want to meet up with Him?”
Question: What is God like? Write down many adjectives that describe something about God. (Try to do it in 2 minutes. Compare with others and discuss.)
Getting to Know God
God is so great. Can He really be known? Certainly, this is an insightful question. No one questions whether God is different from us.
Elihu rightly reminded Job, “Behold, God is exalted, and we do not know Him; The number of His years is unsearchable” (Job 36:26 1).
There is a genuine sense that we cannot really know God and yet the Bible and God Himself challenges us to know God. We conclude that there are certain aspects about God that we cannot really know but there are other aspects of Him that we can know.
But we need to be careful, because just stating these things, assumes a number of concepts about God and reality that are being hotly contested in this world.
Let us step back and observe what people believe about God.
