Purpose: If we are going to understand God, then we must use His 'personal diary,' the Bible, prepared for us to get to know Him. Other means will lead us astray. 1 John 1:3-4 provide 3 key questions to understand knowing God.
The Bible is the reliable ancient book delivered from our Creator so that we could be guarded from the many wrong concepts out there and come to personally know Him. He wants us to know Him and through the Gospel made it so that we could.
So in this series, we will regularly use and depend on scriptures to help us grasp a more accurate and complete picture of God. Are we pretending that we can know all about Him? Absolutely not. There are aspects about God that we cannot here fully appreciate.
We can hardly understand the scope of the universe. Why would we act as if we could understand the power of the One who put and holds it together? We should not conclude, however, that we cannot appreciate His power. This is true on many different levels that we will address in upcoming chapters.
Let’s get down to the basics here. Again, remember we are using but one one verse. It is not complete in the picture it gives us of God.
However, by carefully contemplating on what it is suggesting with many other scriptures, it is sufficient to draw certain conclusions about God and His purposes. (Test them if you desire by reading through other parts of the Bible and seeing whether it affirms the same message!)
“And indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete" (1 John 1:3-4).
In exploration of this topic of knowing God, let us focus on three questions from 1 John 1:3-4. Each tackles a significant aspect to knowing God.
(1) Can I know God?
(2) How do I get to know God?
(3) Does knowing God bring a change in my life?
Each tackles a significant aspect to knowing God.
