God’s Good Plan

What does God want for us? On the sixth day after He had made everything, the Lord made an important declaration, “And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31). Things were very good. This summarizes God’s hope for our marriages. Marriage was designed not only to experience a great life but to help us understand awesome spiritual realities of intimacy (Ephesians 5:32; Song of Solomon).

Did you note that after God said how good He made things, He made another rather puzzling statement. Perhaps this event was sandwiched in before the very last one. “Then the LORD God said, It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18). God went on and made Eve for Adam and established marriage. Yes, it was probably after all this He declared it was all very good.

Marriage is a relationship in which man and women can grow in a very deep and beautiful relationship. I want you to make this kind of marriage relationship the kind you are seeking after. It is not often seen in the world, but through Jesus, we can be remade to obtain that kind of marriage. Our question is, “How are we to get this kind of marriage?”

God has given my wife and I such a beautiful marriage. We had many lessons to learn to reach this point. Satan wanted the worse for us. The Lord, however, wants the best for us and you. How would you answer the question, “What makes a great marriage?” If we use the analogy of cooking, what ingredients are needed for a great marriage?

Write down your answer and then we will give you both of our answers.

Paul: A great marriage describes a couple in sweet harmony, mutually caring for each other, sensitive to their needs, and together purposed to do God’s work.

Linda: A great marriage describes a husband and wife who know each other and are committed to living life as God designed.
