“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32)
Two attacks simultaneously face the Christian believer, both often unknowingly undermine the strength of the Christian faith. The first is a denial of any real truth. This undermines the Christian message based on the actual facts of Christ’s death and resurrection. Evolution falsely claims the base of this attack, claiming ‘the truth’ of a disorderly, murky glob produces orderly and masterfully-designed life and matter–though science has totally disproven that disorder, and the Word of God wholly counters this tarnished view of man and the universe.
The other attack, which forms our focus, is the surge of discussion on our feelings as being fully trustworthy. Truth, then, becomes warped into a call to being true to one’s feelings, being authentic. Being true to one’s feelings is supposed to lead to fulfilled lives. This whole modern conclusion is very untrue, both in experience and through the testimony of the Word of God.
Jesus concisely asserted the truth sets us free–not our feelings. In other words, the push to focus on our feelings gunk up our lives and strips us of our hope to live above our sinful lives cluttered with Satan’s temptations, leaving us chained to our lust along with sad, defeated thoughts. How wonderful to hear from Jesus that we can live above our feelings and desires. We are more than our chemistry and have a soul that Christ redeems to experience the power of Christ is in our lives!
In this short clip from 1 Peter 1:22 we will see how to deal with those feelings and how the truth should shape our lives rather than our feelings. Make sure you work through the study questions below it.
