The Way to Know God

Join God’s Facebook Account

Purpose: To show how God regularly and commonly reveals Himself so that we would know more about Him and rightly respond to Him. Using God's Facebook account serves as an illustration.

God reveals Himself through all sorts of means including the created material world (Romans 1:19-20), our consciences (Romans 2:14-15) and God’s Word (Psalm 19). Get the hint? God wants us to personally know and be influenced by Him, not just a little, but a lot.

Why not eagerly seek God like you do your great friends. You can trust Him. He regularly communicates to you, but you don’t respond back.

Think of your private devotional times and a walk through the woods as times that God is speaking to us. He is trying to gain our attention. He doesn’t want us to just to read the Bible or admire the woods.

Instead, He wants us to connect the dots. You like the woods? Thank Him. He designed them with us in mind.

When you read the Word, don’t do it like a ritual but a special time God is revealing something special about Himself or His plans – just like a friend when he or she shares something from his or her heart with you. Prayer, praise and thanks are means we respond on His account. We tell Him we like it.

Close friendships and spiritual progress

Our relationship with God is like a friendship. Friendships grow when both sides are eagerly excited about meeting each other. Right now there is a mystery to our relationship with God and many factors to developing it, not unlike our relationships with those around us.

By spending time with God, we become more like Him. And because of this, our spiritual lives are all about how much we know God. Some of us think that this getting to know God is a spiritual or heavenly matter – for the future. Once in heaven, all will be cared for. This is true in a certain sense. When Jesus returns, Johns says that we will be like Him.

“Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be. We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure” (1 John 3:2-3 - NASB).



This perspective, however, misses out on what is to happen now before God is fully revealed to us. We are to edge closer and closer to Him and thus getting to know who He is and what pleases Him.

One of my daughters has a boyfriend. She so much likes to be with him, that on Saturday morning she actually went over to his office to spend time with him, as he finished some office work. That kind of devotion goes a long ways in developing relationship with God.
