Other Scriptures & the Goodness of God
Purpose: When we look at the Psalms and other Bible passages, we will find hundreds of references to God's goodness and blessing. This study continues focusing on the topic: The Goodness of God.
God is always good. This is His nature. When we question our Lord’s goodness due to personal difficulties or blatant evil around us, then we are humming the evil one’s tune. Instead, trust in God’s goodness, and your heart will not be troubled.
The holy scriptures state so much about the goodness of God. We will first look at some Psalms and then other scriptural passages.
A Psalms study
The goodness of God can be discovered throughout the scriptures. Let’s first look at a select number of passages that help us see how closely the Lord ties ‘goodness’ to His own name.
“O taste and see that the LORD is good ; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” (Psalm 34:8).
“For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting, and His faithfulness to all generations” (Psalm 100:5).
“Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing praises to His name, for it is lovely” (Psalm 135:3).
“Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart!” (Psalm 73:1).
“The LORD is good to all, And His mercies are over all His works” (Psalm 145:9).
God is repeatedly declared as being good. “The LORD is good” is literally “good Yahweh” in the original Hebrew. The two words are put adjacent to each other. In English we need to put an equative verb like ‘is’ in between the two words to make sense, but the meaning is the same.
When we think of God, we should think of His goodness. When we think of goodness, we should think of God. God is inherently good. All that He does is good. We can see that in other verses scattered all over the Bible.
The Lord is good - Other Passages
“The voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who say, “Give thanks to the LORD of hosts, For the LORD is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting”; and of those who bring a thank offering into the house of the LORD. For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were at first, ‘says the LORD” (Jeremiah 33:11).
“The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him” (Lamentations 3:25).
“The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him” (Nahum 1:7).
“For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with gratitude” (1 Timothy 4:4).
The word ‘good’ or ‘goodness’ is used 622 times in the Bible (NASB). The word in the Hebrew is very generic, much like in English. ‘Good’ in English can refer to a good desert or a good wife. The same is true in Hebrew.
The context, whether it be these verses above or in Genesis 1, helps shape what ‘good’ really means. Goodness describes God’s ultimate satisfying and constant way of kindly treating His creatures.
