Overcome Anxiety: Finding Peace, Discovering God

Defining Our Anxiety Problem

And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN."

And this expression, "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, in order that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

(Hebrews 12:26-27).
Anxiety comes from the lack of confidence in those things we have trusted for our essential needs. Our trust went from God to other things or people. When these things that we have relied upon reveal some form of instability, we get insecure. We are not sure how our needs will be met. Insecurity occurs when we begin to discover those things which we have trusted in are no longer trustworthy. As a result we are confused and unsure of the future.

Those deepest needs are often hidden away deep in our hearts. They are acquired early on and are hard to notice and examine.

Insecurity is like an earthquake deep down in our hearts that sends shock waves or worries to our lives.

Four categories of false trust: wealth, partners, position and religion.Above we have identified four categories which man commonly depends on for caring for his or her needs. There are many others.

  • Wealth,
  • Partners,
  • Position and
  • Religion.

For example, many clever people committed suicide during America's Great Depression. They lost their fortunes, their wealth. The key reason for their suicide was that they had lost their confidence in caring for their needs. They had no way to deal with the future except to avoid it.

Overcome Anxiety: Finding Peace, Discovering GodThe problem mankind faces is that God is going to shake anything that man puts his confidence in. Hebrews 12:26-27 assures us that the Lord will shake both the heaven and earth.

If our confidence is in our invested wealth, then we will discover that we are preoccupied with preserving that invested wealth. We are paying close attention to its welfare not just for interest and greed but also because of the role it plays in our security. When the market begins to quiver, out exudes a great amount of worry.

Remember, in the majority of cases the problem is not that we fear we will have no food on the table or cannot go home to our house, but simply because deep our confidence in whatever we trust is threatened. Some people make people their confidence. Others rely on their jobs or titles. Some think their religion, philosophy or secularism will protect their essential needs.

Tolerance for anxiety destroys our lives. It reveals that our hearts are attached to this perishing world rather than our Father's kingdom. Our challenge is to live beyond a preoccupation of ourselves and trust our needs into God's wonderful care for our lives.
