Paul J. Bucknell
Twelve reflections from Psalm 32:8-9 give us different angles on understanding God's will for our lives.
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.”
#1 "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” It is Jehovah, our Lord, who graciously promises to teach and guide us. Why are we so slow to depend on His leading?
#2 "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you…” Our dire need for instruction and training persists through life.
#3 "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you…” If we are not hungering for instruction, self-confidence threatens our spiritual welfare and interferes with our ministry.
#4 Good teaching “teach(es) you in the way you should go,” and therefore can be trusted. It is not grade or people conscious but life conscious. Psalm 32:8
#5 God is very conscious of our future and wants to share His insights with us! "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” Psalm 32:8
#6 Pride and self-confidence leads to folly. Without the Lord’s input we are headed for trouble. ”I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” Psalm 32:8
#7 Need advise, counsel, help in making decisions? The Lord is there! "I will counsel you." Ps 32:8
#8 The fact of God’s ability to teach and counsel us differs from how, the methods, God teaches us. How does the Lord teach us? Ps 32:8
#9 Do we regularly place ourselves in learnable situations like a person waiting at a bus stop? Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding (Ps 32:9).
#10 How insightful to compare our unwillingness to turn from our lame ignorance with a stubborn horse and mule. We not only sin but resist turning from our own wicked ways (Ps 32:9).
#11 No one likes discipline, but it works. “Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle.” (Ps 32:9)
#12 Don’t be deluded; discipline is not for a period of time but ongoing. Otherwise, instruction “will not stay near you.” Ps 32:8-9
