Note the different tribes but also their ancestors. Canaan was of course largely from descendants of Ham (Girgashites, Hivites, Hittites, Amorites, Jebusites, Perizzites and the Philistines. Shem also has his ancestors (Ammonites, Edomites, Moabites). Usually the nations were named after their forefather who 'started' the tribe or nation.
The proper term to use is Canaan and not Palestine. Palestine is not a biblical term (not in the Bible) and was only used starting 135 A.D. by the Romans for the land of Israel.The term 'land of Canaan' is used many times starting in Genesis.
This map can serve as a great tool in helping students understand what the land of Canaan looked like at the time of Joshua when he conquered Canaan.
You might use this map and then show a larger map of the descendants of Noah's three sons to provide a larger context. This is a more detailed of one small region of the world.
