Share His Glory with His People from John 17:24-26 is the last of six prayer requests made during Jesus' lengthy prayer at the end of the Upper Room Discourse which both summarizes what has been said but also shows the glory that He purposes to share with His people forever in eternity. Includes Bible study questions.

6) Share His Glory with His People (John 17:24-26)

“Father, I desire that they also, whom Thou has given Me, be with Me where I am, in order that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me...” (John 17:24).

Jesus tells us what His deepest desires are. He desires to further radiate God’s glory by being consumed with God’s purpose. This union brings about a greater glory when God’s people by Christ’s faithful service add to His glory (also see 17:22).

Questions on John 17:24-26Study Corner

  1. What is it that Jesus here says He desires (17:24)?

  2. Although verse 24 does not speak conclusively about Christ’s eternal preexistence (like in John 1:1-3), it does say a lot about Christ. List what teaching’s about Christ can be drawn from this verse.

  3. Jesus wraps up this great plan of God by summarizing His part in it. Make your own summary from what Jesus shares in verses 25-26.

Summary

The Father had a plan to exude greater glory by this sacrificial plan of sending Christ into the world. Only with a clear vision of God’s greater purposes can we endure suffering and pain for the sacrifice for others. In this way, God’s love becomes embedded in our own lives.

Reflection and application questions

Conclusion of series 'Jesus Priestly Prayer' in John 17

Before the tragic incident immediately following this prayer (see John 18:1), Jesus unfolds His heart to God His Father before His disciples and us.

Jesus was making certain requests of the Father not only regarding His own life and commitment but for His disciples, those that were and others that would come to be (including us).

Before the storm broke out, Jesus went over the whole plan of redemption. The pain was worth it. Jesus would endure the cross for the Father’s greater glory.
