John 5:19-20 Christian Living by Understanding the Mind of Christ
Purpose
Provide Bible Study Questions for John 5:1-9, Learning from Jesus’ Compassion, so that we can learn how to bring hope in despairing situations.
Jesus, similar to John 4, strategically went places and said what He did. In this case Jesus went to a pool to heal a lame man (5,000 square yards+). You can go there today, though not sure you want to. This is not like the pools that we are familiar with! We can learn not only about Jesus’ power but how Jesus related to this paraplegic.
Where was Jesus before He went here to Jerusalem (see 4:54).
What was going on at this time in Jerusalem (5:1)?
What place was positioned near to the Sheep Gate (5:2)? Describe what it might look like.
What was its name? (Note: versions slight differ on its spelling). (John 5:2).
What is the difference between this place and the pools nowadays one might go to (5:3)?
Why did these certain people gather around the pool (5:4)?
Who does John introduce in verse 5? What do you know about him (5:5)?
What might Jesus have observed about the man to conclude he had been there a long time (5:6)?
What did Jesus ask the man (5:6)?
What is the significance of this question? Do you think he still had hope to get better?
What did Jesus tell the man to do (5:8)? Be specific.

Where do people around you put their hope? What might cause their hope to fade away?
Think about religious leaders, executives, or those having various roles in politics or media. Pick out two or three for the following exercise.
List the varying degrees of hope people might put in these individuals (historic or current) at different points in their lives. Use the line below to measure people’s changing hope through time.

How do you respond to people around you who put there hope in things other than Jesus? How does their degree
When John presents Jesus’ ministry and teaching, we find that it matches well with what we read in John 1 about who the Word is. Jesus is God and lives on earth to bring life into the world. If a person has this Jesus-given life, then we should expect to see that life radically impact his or her life.
