Purpose: Exposes the bankruptcy of humanistic secularism against the backdrop of God's glorious kingdom. This is part 2 of 4 in a larger series 'The Choice Against Secularism.'

Secularism is bankrupt

Humanistic secularism proclaims man as able to help himself. We see this in the efforts of some to save the earth. They have totally ruled out God’s part in the earth’s welfare.

Man’s efforts are so feeble and corrupted. Just take a quick look around at the newspaper headlines, one corruption case after another. And what about all the ones in the making. We should be horrified at the morally bankrupt condition of the educational, governmental, religious and societal institutions of mankind.

The Catholic church just agreed to pay ten million dollars to her victims. Instead shining as a beam of light, the church has often been sucking from its victims rather than directing the life giving stream from heaven. Religions, including Protestant efforts (despite their heritage) that have turned sour through liberal theologies of sorts, are man-centered. The results are obvious.

Only those deep biblical convictions rooted in a relationship with God through Jesus Christ bring life, hope, joy and peace.

When Adam rejected God’s goodness in the Garden of Eden, he was cast out of the garden to die without the abounding grace of God. True, he still experienced the limited provisions of God, but he would suffer as he plodded about caring for his needs. Jesus Christ came to reverse this cycle. He came to put a hold on secularism and have God’s kingdom begin to grow. God’s kingdom is like the new Garden of Eden, though not fully seen, we can now eat from its delightful fruits.

Many Christians in the West, persuaded from the philosophies of secular humanism, though part of God’s kingdom, still live as if they are not part of His new provision. They live according to the old rules of the world. These old ways, however, do not bring God’s grace into their lives or the people around them. Perhaps many of these professors of faith really are not believers at all. We must as the difficult question, “What is it that they belief?

Instead of living by faith, they live by sight.

Instead of living in the power of God’s love, they live through their self-effort condemned by trusting their own resources. Part of this problem is the trusting of their right living to be adequate to gain God’s acceptance.

Much has been written about this. But what has gone unnoticed is the reliance on man’s effort for spiritual well-being. Much faith is given to secular counseling or even quasi Christian counseling that uses the humanistic methods.

A large flaw in their reasoning is their belief that faith only has to do with getting to heaven and escaping judgment rather than entering a close relationship with God which now by His grace produces a fruitful life deriving from that God-man relationship.

When people are deeply helped by God’s grace, they cannot but tell about God’s stories of grace. Their own lives become a play where people can see God’s goodness. This happens when God’s people start living out their earthly lives by faith.

All of a sudden, one sees that they are no longer dependent upon their circumstances to get things done but on God. Of Abraham it says,

“In hope against hope he believed, in order that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE.” And without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb; yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief, but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what He had promised, He was able also to perform” (Romans 4:18-21 - Study questions).

Reaching Beyond Mediocrity shows how this faith is practically lived out in our daily lives.

Abraham lived according to different principles. He lived by faith. The promise of God guided him into right behavior even though it looked foolish in the eyes of the world. We will see that our greatest blessings likewise will come through trusting in God despite what one sees. This person sees his need for God’s kindness and goes to God through Christ.

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).
