Book of Philippians Introduction
Bible Study Questions for Philippians 1:27-30 highlight how the full power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to impact our live just as it did through Paul’s life.
“27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ; so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; 28 in no way alarmed by your opponents--which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. 29 For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, 30 experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.” (Philippians 1:27-30).
What is the first direct command in Philippians? Where is this verse and how does it differ from the former verses?
What does the Gospel of Christ' refer to (1:27)?
Paul sets before them the high standard, “In a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ” in Philippians 1:27a. What does this mean?
What does this phrase, “Whether I come and see you or remain absent” in Philippians 1:27b adds to the meaning? Why do you think Paul thinks it needs to be stated?
What kind of report does Paul want to hear from the Philippians (Philippians 1:27b-c)?
What does ‘stand firm in one spirit’ mean? (You might want to contrast it with ‘sit down and carry out your own selfish purposes.) Note: ‘one spirit’ refers to the animating life that God instills in the believer through the Holy Spirit.
What does ‘with one mind striving together’ mean? (You might want to think of ‘mind’ (lit. ‘psuche’ soul) as team spirit.)
What are they to strive together for? Have you ever done that? When, where and with who?
Some people want to excuse themselves from seriously discussing unity because others would take advantage of them. “If I did this, then they might...” Is this a valid excuse? Explain.
Read Philippians 1:28. How should we think of unity and those who probably are not genuine believers (because of doctrine or lifestyle)? Should we accept them as one of us and hope for the best? How should Paul’s use of ‘opponents’ influence your answer?
What does Paul mean in 1:28, “in no way alarmed ... which is a sign of destruction”? Why might he say this?
What has God privileged some of God’s people with? See Philippians 1:29.
Do you think of suffering as a privilege or abuse? Why? Why might Paul think of it as a privilege?
Paul served as a good example. In what way does he serve as an example in Philippians chapter 1. Start with verse one and end up with this last verse of 1:30.
Is there unity in your church? What about in your heart? Discuss.
‘Striving together.’ Would you be open to dedicating your extra time, effort and money to help (not lead) start a church? Why and why not?
How do you treat ‘cults’ like Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons? Should we think that they are one of us? Reflect on Paul’s usage of ‘opponents’ and reflect how you should deal with them if they infiltrated your church. Have you ever had to deal with such pressures? How did you handle it? How did it work out?
How are you doing living out a consistent Christian life? Do you hold to a high standard of the Gospel? Do you have double standards? In what specific ways could you make changes to improve your consistency in reflecting Christ?
