Basic Bible Study Questions (Mat 11:28-30)

28 Come to me, all who are weary and heavy–laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and You shall find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My load is light. (Matthew 11:28-30 NASB)

They do not merely keep us from evil but lead us to truth. Because of the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, the people of God can have the love and holiness of God dominate their lives.

1. Who does Jesus call to Himself in verse 28? Is He being exclusive? Explain.

2. What is the difference between weary and heavy-laden?

3. Can you think of a time when you were weary and burdened down? Please share.

4. What does Jesus promise those who come to Him (28)? What does that mean?

5. Jesus gives two commands in verse 29. What are they? Explain the meaning of each of these in your own words.

6. How is the phrase “for I am gentle and humble in heart” related to the two prior commands?

7. Do you think of Jesus as gentle and humble in heart? Why or why not? Who do you know is like that?

8. Describe and explain how a yoke works. (Draw a picture if you have paper.)

9. A yoke was a common symbol of subjection. Was it here? What do you think Jesus meant by telling us to take his yoke upon us (28)?

10. Do you think Jesus’ laws and rules are hard or heavy? Compare with 1 John 5: 3, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.”

11. How does Jesus make what seems heavy light (30)?
    Jesus also tells us to “learn from Me.” In what areas have you learned from Jesus? What areas do you think He has nothing to teach you? Explain.

In summary, Jesus promises rest for the weary, but tells them to take His yoke upon them! But then promises His yoke is light. Try to explain or illustrate how all of this works together.

Personal summary question=>

Jesus tells us to take His yoke upon us to help eliminate the stress we meet in life. Name one area in which you have taken that yoke upon your and found freedom, and one area where you are hesitant or find resistance to do so. Why do you find resistance?
