1 Peter Bible Study Questions: 1:1-2 || 1:3-12

“Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in fullest measure” (1 Peter 1:1-2, NASB).

Peter seeks God’s fullest measure of blessing in the lives of those Christian believers that were now scattered from their homes by reminding them of how they belonged to God.

1. From you present Bible knowledge, list five scenes where Peter stood out as one of the major characters (from Gospels and Acts). List one trait we learn about Peter from each scene.

2. What is an alien? Why do you think he called them aliens?
   

3. What places did Peter mention in 1 Peter 1:1? Locate them first on a Bible map. Find this same area on a modern map.
   

4. Peter also calls them ‘scattered.’ Do you think this means they were being oppressed and were refugees? Scan 1 Peter to see any cues confirming this.
   

5. Peter included many theological teachings even in these first two verses of 1 Peter. Carefully go over these verses and state what main doctrines Peter introduced. State both the significant words and the associated teaching(s).
   

6. What does ‘chosen’ here refer to? Who does the choosing? What are the implications of being chosen?
   

7. Who are the three persons Peter refers to in 1:2? From Peter’s words, what is the relevance of each one to the believer?
   

8. Though the word ‘trinity’ is not used in the Bible, do you think Peter here was subtly introducing these three persons of the trinity? Explain.
   

9. Throughout this book Peter seeks ways to infuse God’s ‘grace and peace’ into their lives. How would you convey the meaning of these two words in your own words? Which do you sense a greater need for right now?
   

10. When is one time you felt like you did not belong? What is one way God’s persistent care for you helps affirm how much you belong to Him?

Advanced Study Questions

• While reading through the Gospel of Mark and Acts 1-12, highlight the things Peter experienced and learned. Note any significance on how it shaped his faith to write this book.

• How did Peter’s letter historically relate to Paul’s missionary journeys? Suggestion: Start by comparing the dates and places of Paul’s journey, his martyrdom and the possible dating of this letter along with Peter’s martyrdom.
  

• Do you think doctrine is important? Why or why not? Does your church think much of doctrine? Why do you think Peter emphasized doctrine in this book?
  

• Does the teaching of election and the use of this word ‘chosen’ here refer to the same thing? Explain. Why is it important to know one is chosen (Peter thought so right)?
