Jesus clearly sets before us the promise of rewards for following Him in Mark 10:29-30. There will be those times, because of our sacrifices, purposed or not, we might be tempted to drag our heads low or even give up, but Jesus’ words call us to look up and beyond to all that He has promised for those who faithfully follow Him. It is worth it, not just now but in the future!

29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, 30 but that he shall receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.” (NASB used)
Who gave this promise in verses 29-30? Why do you think Jesus adds the word “truly” in this promise (29)?
In verse 29 Mark lists the various situations of those who can gain Jesus’ promise. What are they?
What does it mean to leave a house (29)?
What does it mean to leave a brother, sister, mother, father or children (29)?
Why would leaving a farm be so difficult (29)?
Match the following situations with one of the situations above:
What are the difference between the two: “For my sake and for the gospel’s sake” (29)?
Give an instance when you had to do something “for Jesus’ sake.”
Can you remember a situation when someone had to give up something because of the gospel? Explain.
Is there an area that you are now struggling regarding your willingness to make a right decision even though there might be some risk? If yes, explain. If not, think of one from the past. How did you handle it?
What does Jesus promise in verse 30?
What are the two different time frames in which we should expect to see those promises fulfilled (30)?
Give an instance where you have heard or seen how Jesus’ promise has been fulfilled now.
One of the reasons people fear and compromise is that they are afraid of the future. How does Jesus’ promise help us deal with this worry–especially he now aspect?
Jesus promises to take care of our physical and emotional needs now and for all eternity. Do you think about eternity?
Name three of the most special blessings you expect to happen when you meet up with Him in heaven.
Where is Jesus now? What has He suffered? What was He rewarded?
The reason Jesus gave this promise was to encourage His disciples to make the right decisions even under threat. He was building up their commitment to Him and the gospel. Below are several commitment statements that can be strengthened by stating them and aligning our hearts with their deeper values. Carefully read through each one. Which one means most to you right now? Why?
