Even when circumstances get difficult, by closely imitating our now risen Lord Jesus Christ and embracing His full measure of grace and peace in our lives, we can share in Christ’s joy and imperishable kingdom inheritance.
Peter brings comfort and encouragement to believers who are scattered about due to oppressive situations so that they can live strong and godly lives in this difficult if not antagonistic world.
Peter reveals a deeper and glorious community to which God’s people belong, one which started before time, was established by Christ’s death, confirmed by His resurrection, and endures beyond time.
Christian believers learn how their faith in Christ helps them embrace God’s abounding grace to gain their eternal award, no matter what they might face. Peter identifies four hopes that verifies the extraordinary value of our faith in Christ.
Believers are called to resolute preparation in living out the ‘HOLY’ life. With God’s character as the standard to follow, Peter focuses our faith and hope on the gracious sacrifice that alone eternally redeems repentant sinners.
Peter calls believers to love one another out of our new nature, which was acquired through being born again. He also calls and encourages us to deeply desire the word of God.
Peter conveys the deep importance of believers being set apart from those who do not believe. The meaning and purpose of being a chosen priest is laid out in vivid images.
Much of our battle consist in identifying our positions in life and in properly conducting them according to Christ to the glory of God, whether in marriage, at work, among our neighbors or fellowshipping with God’s people.
Peter reminds us that believers are alien to what this world values. Still, we must follow in Christ’s steps; living in respectful submission to human authority, doing what is good and entrusting ourselves to God who judges justly.
Peter captures believers’ hearts and minds by carefully presenting the glorious call of their godly roles in marriage as well as the extraordinary grace to live out great marriages.
God’s blessings are spread to others through the lives of Christians when they understand the implications of godly living and openly reject ungodly ways.
Obedience is important but in this section we find that we also need to have Christlike attitudes to properly carry out God’s Word in a way that brings glory to His Name.
As Christians set apart Christ as Lord, we grow in knowing and doing what is right. Even when it brings slander or suffering, we live with a clear conscience rather than in fear, knowing that we receive God’s priceless blessing.
Now is the time to imitate Christ and live for God’s purposes. Humanity should be aware that God will hold all people accountable.
Believers have a limited time span to carry out God’s appointed good works for them and must purposely use their spiritual gifts to accomplish God’s greater purposes through their lives.
It is normal, not strange, for believers to have trials of faith. As God’s Spirit rests upon us we learn to rejoice in the midst of the things we suffer on His behalf, while at the same time continuing to do good.
Church leaders should be aware of the importance of caring for God’s flock. A leader’s life should be exemplary; characterized by a willingness to serve, the absence of greed and the rejection of abusive power (manipulation).
Peter provides invaluable advice to those who struggle with difficult situations and harassing temptations during their short time on earth.
Conclusion (5:12-14): Returning to the beginning theme, Peter exhorts us to focus on our true identify and calling in Christ’s glorious kingdom.
Throughout his letter, Peter has sought to encourage the church to live a strong, ‘Holy’ Christian witness in an antagonistic world. He now ends by calling believers in Christ to “stand fast” in the grace and peace of God.
