14 For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fulness of God. (3:14-21 NASB).
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21, NASB).
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21 NIV).
- (Intro) Name all the superheroes that you can. Why are they so popular? In this study we will be looking into real not fictitious power. We will discover in these verses how each of His people can through God’s grace be a place God's great power is seen.
- Ephesians 3:20-21 is part of a longer prayer that begins in 3:14. Read the whole text aloud. Although this is one prayer, it has two parts. How are the two parts of the prayer (14-19) and (20-21) different?
- Ephesians 3:14-19 is an intercessory prayer. Circle the times the word ‘you’ is used. When is the last time you prayed for someone else? What did you ask God to do?
- Ephesians 3:20-21 is quite different from the previous prayer. How would you describe this kind of prayer? Have you ever prayed this way before. Why or why not?
- What two words are repeated in these two verses (once in 3:20 and once in 3:21)?
- The word ‘power’ had been used in Ephesians five times up this point describing God’s greatness. Find them and read them aloud. (The word ‘is able to” comes from the same root word for power but this cannot be seen in the English - “who has power to”).
- This Greek word for ‘power’ is dunamis. Can you think of any English words that have come from this Greek word relating to power?
- Where have you seen the greatest works of power? Share and explain.
- Explain words does Paul use to describe this power in Ephesians 3:20?
Where is this power said to be actively at work (3:20)? What does this practically mean?
- Let us move on and look at Ephesians 3:21. What does it say should go to Him (God)? What does this word mean?
- Share one of the most glorious things you have seen.
- How are the words power and glory related? (Advanced question).
- What are the two places that God is said to reveal His glory (Ephesians 3:21)?
- Give one or two ways God’s glory is shown in Jesus Christ.
- What is the church? (The Greek word ekklesia literally means ‘congregation’ or ‘assembly’).
- Give one or two ways God’s glory is shown in the church.
- Why do you think He mentioned these two places and not the creation? (advanced)
- How is it that God’s glory will be shown in the church and Christ for all generations?
Application
- It is normal for each Christian both to experience God’s power and glory in their lives. Have you? Pray that God would show more of His glory through your lives?
- We might think that if Jesus was with us wherever we went that our whole life would be so much better? Why? How would He impact those around you? These verses teach us that the Lord wants to live out His life through our lives. Think one specific place you would like to see more of Jesus’ power lived out in your life for the sake of others. Pray this through.
- We are to live for God’s praise. Write down the major things you are doing in your life through the day. Ask yourself:
(1) Are you doing these things for God’s glory?
(2) How can you more clearly do these things for His glory.
- Have you ever stolen God’s glory? If so, name a time (and confess it if you have not).
