Now the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you.'”

1.      Who is the angel of the Lord? Check a concordance or Bible search program.

2.      Who was he speaking to?

3.      What are the two things that he said in Judges 2:1?

4.      What is the Lord talking about when He mentions bringing them out of Egypt? When was this? Where is it found in the Bible? Review the map and find Egypt and Israel.

5.      What did the Lord do on Mount Sinai? What does covenant mean?

6.      What difference does it make if the Lord says He will not break His covenant? Does it really matter? Think about what difference it makes if you think you can get divorce or not. What impact does it have on the marriage?

And as for you, you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed Me; what is this you have done?

7.      What two things does the Lord ask from the Israelites in this covenant (2:2)?

8.      Do you think they are hard? Why or why not?

9.      Why is tearing down the altars important? Isn’t it good for a historical reminder?

10.   Did the Israelites obeyed God?

11.   The phrase, “What is this you have done?” is quite powerful. Pause for a few minutes and ask if the Lord wants you to obey Him on any matter. Commit that to Him. Repent. Write down what you will do different later.

Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall become as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.’

12.   What did the Lord promise to do for the Israelites in Judges 2:3? Did He do that in the past? Give one incident.

13.   What does He promise to do in the future?

14.   Did you ever have an encounter with thorns? Please describe.

15.   How can the gods of the people that were in the land before them become a snare to them? Explain.

16.   What ‘gods’ or philosophies influence our lives today? What are some practices that we do because of these gods? How do these practices cause problems in our lives?

And it came about when the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept. So they named that place Bochim; and there they sacrificed to the LORD. (NASB)

17.   What was the response of the Israelites to what the Lord said in verse 3?

18.   Is that the right response? Why or why not? Please explain.

19.   Read Joshua 7:4-10. What was the response of Joshua in that situation? Was it the right response? How do you know? Why did God reject their signs of grief? (We know the Israelites didn’t repent because it doesn’t state that they did. If they did, God would have blessed them and recorded this. Instead, in the succeeding paragraphs outlines how the people of God left God after the time of the elders that new Joshua).

20.   God was not pleased with their response. What is it that God really wanted? Why is it that sometimes we use religious ceremony instead of repentance? Earlier we paused and thought through something the Lord wanted from our lives. Will you actually change your life or just feel good because you thought about doing the right thing?

21.   Take a look at the diagram on the right and explain where Judges 2:1-5 fits into the cycle of decline and renewal.

22.   What do you think about the statement, “If we do not actively pursue God’s ways, then we will just follow the course of the world.” How is it true in your life? Share two ways that you are (or will) actively pursue the Lord’s ways.
